Technology in an agricultural/horticultural context

Planning for practice: Level 6

Students will:

  • critically analyse their own and others’ past and current planning practices in order to make informed selection and effective use of planning tools
  • use these to support and justify ongoing planning that will see the development of an outcome through to completion.

Selected context

In the context of landscape design, students could:

  • conduct a detailed environmental analysis of an environment to identify features of a microclimate
  • redesign a garden area for a suburban home in response to a family’s requirements
  • redesign an area in the school grounds so that it is suitable for a new purpose.

Brief development: Level 7

Students will:

  • justify the nature of an intended outcome in relation to the issue to be resolved and justify specifications in terms of key stakeholder feedback and wider community considerations.

Selected context

In the context of landscape design, students could:

  • outline changes that need to be made to an existing landscaped area to satisfy identified client needs (for example, the need for a child-friendly garden)
  • describe in detail the specific environmental factors that must be considered when planning a solution that will satisfy the identified needs
  • develop specifications for a landscape plan proposal that incorporates required hard and soft features and addresses identified needs
  • explain how proposed specifications address stakeholder feedback and wider community considerations.

Outcome development and evaluation: Level 7

Students will:

  • critically analyse their own and others’ outcomes and evaluative practices to inform the development of ideas for feasible outcomes
  • undertake a critical evaluation that is informed by ongoing experimentation and functional modelling, stakeholder feedback and trialling in the physical and social environments
  • use the information gained to select, justify, and develop an outcome
  • evaluate this outcome’s fitness for purpose against the brief
  • justify the evaluation, using feedback from stakeholders and demonstrating a critical understanding of the issue.

Selected context

In the context of landscape design, students could:

  • develop a proposal that addresses identified client needs and incorporates required hard and soft features
  • explain how the proposed changes would satisfy the client’s needs and address the specific environmental factors that must be considered
  • develop a detailed plan in response to client feedback, including planting diagrams, a proposed planting schedule, and a projected growth design.
