Statistical graphs

Statistical graphs play an important role in providing a picture of what the data show and enabling reasoning from data. Different graphs show different features of the data and in many instances multiple displays are used to capture the whole data story.

Generally data analysis at this level falls into three main categories:

Summarising

The following graphs can be used for summarising data; these are situations where we want to summarise the key features of the data in question.

Comparing

The following graphs can be used for comparing data; these are situations where we are looking at whether one group of values (measurements) tends to have bigger, taller, heavier, longer, wider values (measurements) than the other group.

Inter-relating

The most useful graph for looking for features of a relationship in data is:

Times series data is another type of relationship, where the most useful graph for looking for features in data is:

Contextual knowledge

The progression for contextual knowledge from level 6 to level 8 is as follows.
