Assessment for learning

Assessment for learning is best described as a process in which:

  • teachers use assessment information to adjust their teaching strategies
  • students use assessment information adjust their learning approach.

Teaching, learning, and assessment are inextricably linked. Each informs the other.

The focus of assessment for learning is to improve teacher practice and optimise outcomes for students by using the information assessment provides. In technology, formative assessment data should be gathered in ways that are appropriate to the learner and the nature of the intended learning.

Formative assessment should be undertaken in a timely and appropriate way throughout the learning experience to ensure that learning opportunities are maximised.
