Learning objective 7-1: Markets

Indicators | Elaborations | Assessment

Students will gain knowledge, practical skills, and experience to:

  • examine how scientific and technological principles are applied to the life processes of plants and/or livestock in order to shape the attributes of primary products for specified markets.

Indicators

  • Explains the role of photosynthesis in plant growth and development, and its influence on product attributes (for example, fruit production, root growth, or leaf development).
  • Explains the role of nutrition in animal growth and development and its influences on the attributes of the product (for example, muscle production, fat deposition, bone growth, and maturation of animal).
  • Describes scientific detail of the reproductive process in a plant or animal, and explains the impact of technological processes used to modify reproduction on the attributes of the product (for example, knowledge of hormones and their effects and use of technologies to enhance the reproductive process).
  • Predicts the impact of reproductive technologies on the growth and development of plants or livestock.
  • Explains the impact of reproductive technologies on the attributes and market opportunities for a product.

Possible context elaborations

  • Fruit production in cherries: Examine the impact of differing exposures to light on cherry quality and yield.
  • Beef cattle: Compare the attributes of feedlot-raised cattle with those raised on hill country.
  • Artificial insemination (AI) in goats: Compare the impact of AI on milk production in goats with meat and wool production. What impact does AI have on the market for goat products?
  • Aquaculture: Examine the impact of different controlled nutrition regimes on the growth and development of named shellfish, on their attributes, and on market opportunities.

Assessment for qualifications

Agricultural and horticultural science programmes integrate concepts and learning from achievement objectives in biology, science, economics, geography, and technology. For this reason, learning can be assessed using achievement standards from a range of subjects as well as those from agricultural and horticultural science. Teachers have considerable scope to select standards that will assess valued learning and engage their students.

Learning described by this objective could be assessed using any one of these achievement standards:

  • AS91289 Agricultural and horticultural science 2.1 Carry out an extended practical agricultural or horticultural investigation; Internal, 4 credits.
  • AS91291 Agricultural and horticultural science 2.3 Demonstrate understanding of advanced plant propagation techniques used for commercial production in New Zealand; Internal, 4 credits.
  • AS91292 Agricultural and horticultural science 2.4 Demonstrate understanding of how management practices influence plant growth and development in NZ commercial production; Internal, 4 credits.
  • AS91293 Agricultural and horticultural science 2.5 Demonstrate understanding of livestock reproductive techniques in commercial production in New Zealand; Internal, 4 credits.
  • AS91294 Agricultural and horticultural science 2.6 Demonstrate understanding of how NZ commercial management practices influence livestock growth and development; External, 4 credits.
  • AS91297 Agricultural and horticultural science 2.9 Demonstrate understanding of land use for primary production in New Zealand; External, 4 credits.
  • AS91153 Biology 2.1 Carry out a practical investigation in a biology context, with supervision; Internal, 4 credits.
  • AS91155 Biology 2.3 Demonstrate understanding of adaptation of plants or animals to their way of life; Internal, 3 credits.
  • AS91156 Biology 2.4 Demonstrate understanding of life processes at the cellular level; External, 4 credits.
  • AS91223 Economics 2.2 Analyse international trade using economic concepts and models; External, 4 credits.
  • AS91226 Economics 2.5 Analyse statistical data relating to two contemporary economic issues; Internal, 4 credits.
  • AS91228 Economics 2.7 Analyse a contemporary economic issue of special interest using economic concepts and models; Internal, 4 credits.

At the time of publication, achievement standards were in development to align them with The New Zealand Curriculum. Please ensure that you are using the correct version of the standards by going to the NZQA website.

The NZQA subject-specific resources pages are very helpful. From there, you can find all the achievement standards and links to assessment resources, both internal and external.

Aligned level 1 achievement standards were registered for use in 2011 and level 2 for use in 2012; level 3 will be registered for use in 2013.
