Students will gain knowledge, skills, and experience to:

  • describe and explain how philosophical inquiry can be applied to a range of issues.


  • Describes the basic assumptions or implications in questions and practical issues.
  • Explains the role of basic assumptions in everyday, practical issues.

Possible context elaborations

  • Describe and explain the basic assumptions that underpin a specific topic. For example, animal welfare legislation, school rules, or conventions about downloading.
  • The basic assumptions that underpin secondary education in New Zealand. Is gaining an education the same as gaining formal qualifications?
