Diagnostic assessment
Diagnostic assessment occurs at the beginning of a year or unit of work and enables the teacher to:
- establish the students’ prior knowledge
- identify misconceptions
- make informed planning decisions
- differentiate learning needs.
What this might look like
The teacher makes use of information gained from:
- previous assessments
- brainstorming as a class or individual activity
- student interviews
- practical activities (for example, a measuring task)
- a rich task used as a diagnostic tool
- a co-operative learning activity used as a diagnostic tool
- effective questioning.
