Design and visual communication L7 AS91339 (2.32) – Produce instrumental perspective projection drawings to communicate design ideas

Note: This standard is derived from the learning objective Visual Communication DVC 7-1 so these key messages need to be read in conjunction with the material for Visual Communication DVC 7-1.

Key messages for design and visual communication achievement standards

Key messages for teachers

  • This achievement standard requires students to produce instrumental perspective projection drawings that clearly communicate student design ideas.
  • Perspective projection drawings are drawings that use pictorial drawing methods that involve parallel and/or angular perspective projection. Note: two point perspective does not meet the requirements of this standard.
  • Drawings need to be a student generated response to a design brief, not from a teacher given exercise. Ensure students produce drawings that communicate their own design ideas in response to a brief.
  • Students must use techniques/principles of instrumental perspective projection drawings. This includes: use of picture plane, station point, eye level lines, ground level lines, vanishing points and height lines.
  • Support students to explore and work out the best angle to communicate their design idea, to show features/details.
  • Support students to select the correct scale for their drawing.
  • Detail of design features required for this standard may include, but is not limited to the features of such things as: windows, door handles, fasteners, reliefs, and fittings.
  • For achieved, a student needs to communicate an instrumental perspective projection drawing to show features of the design and apply appropriate techniques for setting up the drawing.
  • For merit, students need to produce an accurate instrumental perspective projection drawing that clearly shows the detail features of a design idea and apply appropriate techniques for the setting up and accurate completion of the drawing.
  • For excellence, a student needs to effectively communicate an accurate instrumental perspective projection drawing that has selected a viewpoint that allows design features to be shown in detail and with accuracy, in a direction or to a size that allows for the clear and highly informative communication of the design.
