The following objectives indicate the progression in learning by strand that teachers might expect to see across curriculum levels 6–8 (NCEA levels 1, 2, and 3).

Level 6

Students will gain knowledge, skills, and experience to:

6-1: Demonstrate understanding of theoretical knowledge of different approaches to understand why people behave the way they do in society; Demonstrate understanding of psychological debates.

Methodologies

6-2: Demonstrate understanding of the various methodologies used in psychological research.

Fields

6-3: Demonstrate understanding of the different fields of psychology in a real life context(s).

Issues

6-4: Demonstrate understanding of the importance of ethical guidelines to consider social justice and human rights in a New Zealand context.

Level 7

Students will gain knowledge, skills, and experience to:

Approaches

7-1: Examine assumptions underlying approaches to psychology; Examine psychological debates.

Methodologies

7-2: Conduct psychological research with guidance.

Fields

7-3: Examine theories within different fields of psychology.

Issues

7-5: Examine ethical issues to consider rights and responsibilities in local and national contexts.

Level 8

Students will gain knowledge, skills, and experience to:

Approaches

8-1: Analyse the interaction of the use of different psychological approaches in context; analyse the significance of key research and its impact on social forces over time.

Methodologies

8-2: Conduct independent psychological research with consultation.

Fields

8-3: Analyse how different theories are applied within a field of psychology.

Issues

8-4: Analyse viewpoints on an issue in psychology practice.
