Diagnostic assessment

Diagnostic assessment occurs at the beginning of a year or unit of work and enables the teacher to:

  • establish the students’ prior knowledge
  • identify misconceptions
  • make informed planning decisions
  • differentiate learning needs.

What this might look like

The teacher makes use of information gained from:

  • previous assessments
  • brainstorming as a class or individual activity
  • student interviews
  • practical activities (for example, a measuring task)
  • a rich task used as a diagnostic tool
  • a co-operative learning activity used as a diagnostic tool
  • effective questioning.
