Learning objective 7-2: Life processes

Indicators | Elaborations | Assessment

Students will gain knowledge, practical skills, and experience to:

  • examine how scientific and technological principles are applied to management practices used in primary production.

Indicators

  • Explains the scientific concepts and principles involved in plant/livestock growth and development (for example, mineral uptake in plants, the effect of nutrients on the development of young livestock).
  • Carries out and explains advanced plant propagation techniques (for example, grafting, breaking dormancy).
  • Explains reproductive technologies used to improve livestock production (for example, embryo transfer, sire selection).
  • Explains how plant/livestock management practices impact on commercial primary production (for example, dairy farm, orchard, market garden, poultry farm).

Possible context elaborations

  • Growth curves and muscle development in lambs using different feed types: Explore, using practical and research skills, and relate results to scientific concepts (observing appropriate animal ethics).
  • Different types of grafting (such as top cleft and budding) for apple trees: Use practical and research skills to explore reasons for using these techniques.
  • Hormones used to manipulate production: Investigate how this is done (for example, use of CIDR on a large number of dairy cows over a short period to ensure full milk production); explain the impact on production; and discuss issues that arise.
  • Practical investigation of hydroponically-grown compared to field-grown lettuces: Investigate (involving, for example, comparison of growth rates, quality of product, time to harvest).
  • Behaviour of ewes and lambs under different mustering techniques: Investigate to determine appropriate management practices (for example, location, time of day, use of vehicles, different types of dogs).

Assessment for qualifications

Agricultural and horticultural science programmes integrate concepts and learning from achievement objectives in biology, science, economics, geography, and technology. For this reason, learning can be assessed using achievement standards from a range of subjects as well as those from agricultural and horticultural science. Teachers have considerable scope to select standards that will assess valued learning and engage their students.

Learning described by this objective could be assessed using any one of these achievement standards:

  • AS91289 Agricultural and horticultural science 2.1 Carry out an extended practical agricultural or horticultural investigation; Internal, 4 credits.
  • AS91290 Agricultural and horticultural science 2.2 Demonstrate understanding of techniques used to modify physical factors of the environment for NZ plant production; External, 4 credits.
  • AS91291 Agricultural and horticultural science 2.3 Demonstrate understanding of advanced plant propagation techniques used for commercial production in New Zealand; Internal, 4 credits.
  • AS91292 Agricultural and horticultural science 2.4 Demonstrate understanding of how management practices influence plant growth and development in NZ commercial production; Internal, 4 credits.
  • AS91293 Agricultural and horticultural science 2.5 Demonstrate understanding of livestock reproductive techniques in commercial production in New Zealand; Internal, 4 credits.
  • AS91294 Agricultural and horticultural science 2.6 Demonstrate understanding of how NZ commercial management practices influence livestock growth and development; External, 4 credits.
  • AS91153 Biology 2.1 Carry out a practical investigation in a biology context, with supervision; Internal, 4 credits,
  • AS91154 Biology 2.2 Analyse the biological validity of information presented to the public; Internal, 3 credits.
  • AS91155 Biology 2.3 Demonstrate understanding of adaptation of plants or animals to their way of life; Internal, 3 credits.

At the time of publication, achievement standards were in development to align them with The New Zealand Curriculum. Please ensure that you are using the correct version of the standards by going to the NZQA website.

The NZQA subject-specific resources pages are very helpful. From there, you can find all the achievement standards and links to assessment resources, both internal and external.

Aligned level 1 achievement standards were registered for use in 2011 and level 2 for use in 2012; level 3 will be registered for use in 2013.
