Two vertically stacked dot plots entitled ‘Number of pairs of shoes by gender’, with the top row showing male and the bottom row showing female. The two plots share a horizontal scale of number of pairs of shoes from 0 to 20. Each plot consists of vertical stacks of dots, where one dot represents the number of shoes owned by one student, with dots for multiple students with the same number of shoe stacked in a column one on top of the other. Male data begins at 1 pair of shoes with a single dot, peaks of 4 and 7 dots at 3 and 4 pairs respectively, and then 1 or 2 dots at each number of shoes from 5 to 10. There is a large gap between the two dots at 10 pairs and a single dot at 18 pairs. This point at 18 is labelled ‘outlier’. The female data by contrast shows a concentration of dots in the higher numbers of pairs of shoes, for example, 4 dots at 12 pairs, 4 dots at 15 pairs, and 3 dots at 20 pairs. The 18 pair male student falls well within the range of the female data, but is an outlier for the male-only data when the genders are displayed on separate dot plots.
